Let's Celebrate!

As with every project, I challenge myself to create art that speaks directly to the community it serves. From the earliest sketches of Alma, I knew I wanted her to carry something more—something that echoed the craftsmanship of a bygone era and honored cultural traditions that continue to shape our collective identity.

During the design phase, I incorporated motifs inspired by historic Mexican crafts. These elements were essential from the beginning, not simply decorative but deeply symbolic. They brought a handmade quality that felt integral to the spirit of the piece—an acknowledgment that public art can be both contemporary and rooted, both forward-looking and reverent of the past.

These motifs became the connective tissue between Alma and the community she was created for. They elevated the work beyond its physical form, transforming the sculpture into a beacon of hope and a visual reminder of heritage and resilience.

As I release Alma del Barrio to the community, I want to say thanks to El Rio Health, especially to Brenda Goldsmith, Executive Director of the Foundation. Thank you for your stories, your warmth and the trust you placed in me throughout this journey. Your spirit shaped this piece as much as my hands did. With gratitude for allowing this artwork to find its home in you.
